On the bus ride home
I sit alone

Key inside the door

Throw open the window and sit on the fire escape
And wait for a melody
From a balcony somewhere, somebody’s playing a flute
And the music floats down to me
And I dance
And the world becomes brighter
The rest falls away

And Traffic below me roars by
For a moment or two
It’s just me and the flute and the sky
The noise inside my head
The yellows and reds
They fight for attention
But the song fits like a glove
A line from above
A quiet confession
I spin and I sway, alone on my fire escape
I’m safe in a reverie
The notes in the twilight, the delicate trill of the flute
As the beauty moves through me
And I dance like a wave on the ocean
I give up control
As I dance and though I may be broken
I’m suddenly whole
On this evening in early July
For a moment or two
It’s just me and the flute and the sky
My private symphony

They may never know or understand
